Investing in a new shed is a big decision that requires careful planning. Making an informed decision means you can purchase a shed that will suit your home or business for years to come.

One of the decisions customers grapple with the most is choosing between Hot Dip Galvanised Steel and regular painted steel.

In this post we explore both options to help you make an informed choice.

What is Hot Dip Galvanised Steel?

Hot Dip Galvanised Steel is steel that has been coated with a layer of molten zinc, applied at temperatures reaching close to 450 degrees.

The chemical reaction produces zinc carbonate, a product that protects steel from corrosion and rust and increases its strength and durability.

Here's just some of the reasons why we recommend of Hot Dip Galvanised Steel:

1. Paint will wear down after 3-5 years. Once that barrier of protection is broken, rust will form on the underlying bare steel. The paint will start to chip and flake away. When this happens the rust needs to be cleaned away and topped up with more paint.

2. The touch up paint will also eventually wear away and the original coating will start showing severe signs of degradation. After around 5-7 years a complete recoating of paint is required to protect your shed from corrosion.

3. When using Hot Dip Galvanised Steel on your shed, you will enjoy many years of maintenance-free protection. It also protects the interior and exterior of hollow structures.

4. If you live by the coast it is smart to use Hot Dip Galvanised Steel for your shed to protect it from sea water and salt spray exposure.

5. Bond strength is also stronger at 3600psi in comparison to 400psi for paint. Hot Dip Galvanised Steel is abrasion resistant and gives edge and corner protection. It is also 100% recyclable.
